Edible Gardens

One of the best ways to add function to your landscape is to add an herb and/or vegetable garden. Edible gardens are one of the fastest growing trends in landscaping. Growing your own food, once considered an outdated pastime, is now coming back into style for both new and experienced gardeners. Ingredients for a salad don’t get much fresher than when they are pulled directly from the yard. When grown from your own garden, your produce almost always tastes better and you can guarantee that it is organic.

Today’s edible gardens are much different than your grandparents’ labor-intensive vegetable plot located off by itself in a corner of the backyard. Instead, you’re more apt to find vegetables mixed in with ornamentals in a garden border, or grouped together in a raised garden box that is not only a decorative garden element but also easier to care for than a soil-level plot. Also, many of today’s edible gardens are also container gardens that are located just a few steps away from the kitchen on a deck or patio. When planning your outdoor living space, it’s never a bad idea to incorporate an edible garden.
